Where to Send a Balance Transfer Payment: Issuer Payment Addresses

When you request a balance transfer, the new card issuer asks for four things about the account you are paying off: the creditor’s name, your account number there, the amount, and the address where the creditor accepts payments. The first three are on your statement. The fourth is too, and that is the address to use. This page exists because people search for a separate “balance transfer address” for each bank, and there is no such thing. Every issuer we checked uses its ordinary payment address, and several say in their own words that the payment address is the one printed on your statement.

Below is what each issuer publishes as its mailed-payment address on its own website, read on the date shown. A payment sent to the wrong address is a payment that does not arrive, and the old card keeps charging interest and can go late while it is being traced. So treat this page as a way to check what you were given, not as a substitute for the statement.

Before you use any address on this page

  • Use the payment address on your most recent statement. Discover, Citi, Barclays and Comenity all say this directly, and the others’ agreements say the same. Issuers move payment processing between lockboxes, and the statement is updated before any web page is.
  • If the statement and this page disagree, the statement wins. Then call the number on the back of the card and confirm. That call takes two minutes; a misdirected payment takes weeks to find.
  • Give the new issuer your name exactly as it appears on the old account, and the full account number. A transfer that arrives at the right address with the wrong account number is still a transfer that does not post.

Issuer by issuer

Chase

Chase’s customer service text tells cardholders to mail a check or money order, never cash, with their name and account number to Cardmember Services, P.O. Box 94014, Palatine, IL 60094-4014. A second address that appears on Chase’s co-branded card pages, Card Services, P.O. Box 15298, Wilmington, DE 19850, is labeled there as correspondence only, and those pages say payments go to the payment mailing address on the statement. Do not give the Wilmington box to another bank as a payment address.

Citi

Citi does not print a payment address on citi.com. Its card agreements say to follow the payment instructions on the statement, and that billing inquiries go to the address on the front of the statement. The only address in the agreements is for rejecting arbitration, which is not a payment address. If you are transferring a Citi balance to another bank, take the address from your Citi statement, and if you have gone paperless, from the statement PDF in your Citi account. Several third-party sites list Citi payment boxes; we have not reproduced them because Citi does not publish them.

American Express

Amex’s help center gives PO Box 96001, Los Angeles, CA 90096-8000 for first class mail and an express address in Carson, CA for overnight delivery. Amex says to make the payment out to American Express and put the account number on the front of it.

Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo’s mailing addresses page lists one address for consumer credit cards under “payment and customer service”: Wells Fargo Card Services, P.O. Box 51193, Los Angeles, CA 90051-5493. The same page lists different boxes for retail store financing cards, which are not general-purpose Wells Fargo cards; if your card was issued for a specific retailer, use the statement.

U.S. Bank

U.S. Bank publishes different boxes depending on the card’s network. Visa and Mastercard accounts pay to Cardmember Service, PO Box 790408, St. Louis, MO 63179-0408. U.S. Bank-issued American Express accounts pay to PO Box 790185 at the same city and ZIP prefix. Both have overnight addresses, listed in the table. U.S. Bank says to make checks payable to U.S. Bank National Association and, if no coupon is enclosed, to put the account number in the memo line.

Discover

Discover’s contact page has a payment addresses section that prints no address. It says payment addresses are based on where the cardholder lives and directs you to the address on your statement. The only mailing address on the page is for general inquiries and it is in Capital One’s name, since Discover is now part of Capital One; it is not a payment address. Regional Discover payment boxes circulate on other sites; because Discover itself says the address depends on your location, take it from the statement. Discover’s phone number is 1-800-347-2683.

Capital One

Capital One’s help center gives a regular mail address and an overnight address, both marked Attn: Payment Processing. It asks that the account number be written on the check, and notes that USPS Priority Mail is not delivered directly to its processing center, so overnight payments should go by FedEx, UPS or DHL.

Bank of America

Bank of America’s payments FAQ gives PO Box 15019, Wilmington, DE 19850-5019 for consumer cards, with a separate overnight address in Newark, DE, and PO Box 15710 for business cards. Bank of America’s balance transfer pages also state that a transfer cannot be used to pay off any Bank of America account, including from another Bank of America card.

Barclays

Barclays’ US help center lists two payment boxes, one in Philadelphia and one in City of Industry, CA, and tells cardholders to mail payments to the address on their statement. Which box applies to your account is on the statement. Barclays allows 7 to 10 days for mail delivery and counts a payment on the day it is received before 5:00 pm local time. Its phone number is 1-877-523-0478.

Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal lists PO Box 3500, Merrifield, VA 22119-3500 for Visa, Mastercard and American Express card payments on its mailing addresses page, and its credit card agreement names the payee as Navy Federal at the same box. If the address you need is not on its page, Navy Federal says to call 1-888-842-6328.

Synchrony Bank, including CareCredit and store cards

Synchrony’s cardholder FAQ prints two boxes: PO Box 71715, Philadelphia, PA 19176-1715 for private label and store cards, and PO Box 71711, Philadelphia, PA 19176-1711 for Synchrony Visa and Mastercard accounts. Synchrony issues cards for hundreds of retailers and for CareCredit, and the FAQ says to use the payment coupon provided and allow 7 to 10 business days for a mailed payment to post. Because the right box depends on which kind of Synchrony card you hold, confirm it against your statement before giving it to another bank.

Comenity and Bread Financial

Comenity’s help pages did not render for us, and its card agreements say to send payments to the name and address shown on the statement. Comenity issues retailer-branded cards and the payment box can differ by retailer. The only address in the agreement we read is for checks marked “payment in full,” which is not where ordinary payments go. Use the statement.

What the new bank will ask for

Whichever issuer you are transferring to, its request form or phone agent will ask for the creditor’s name as it appears on the statement (for example “Cardmember Services” for a Chase card, not “Chase”), the full account number, the amount you want transferred, and the creditor’s payment address. Have the statement in front of you. Give the amount as a figure that leaves room for the fee, since the fee is added to the transfer and both count against your new credit line. Then keep paying the old card until the payoff shows there; every issuer on this page says so, and our processing time page shows how long that can take.

Common questions

Is there a special address for balance transfers?

No. None of the twelve issuers above publishes one. A balance transfer is a payment sent by the new bank to the old one, and it goes to the old bank’s regular payment address.

What is the Citi address for a balance transfer?

The payment address printed on your Citi statement. Citi does not publish a payment address on its website and its agreements direct you to the statement.

What is the Discover address for a balance transfer?

The one on your Discover statement. Discover says the address depends on where you live and does not print it on its site.

What happens if the transfer goes to the wrong address?

The old card is not paid, interest keeps accruing there, and a due date can pass. The new card has already charged you the transfer amount and the fee. Call the new issuer to trace or stop the payment and the old issuer to say a payment is in transit, and keep making at least the minimum on the old card throughout.

Should the transfer be sent overnight?

You usually do not choose; the new issuer sends the payment its own way, often electronically. The overnight addresses above are for payments you mail yourself.

How we verify this

Every address on this page was read on the issuer’s own website on the date shown, and recorded exactly as printed there. We do not take addresses from other comparison sites, forums or directories, and where an issuer does not print one we say so rather than filling the gap. Issuers change lockboxes without notice. If an address here no longer matches what an issuer prints, tell us and we will check it. For the fees, rates and deadlines on the transfer itself, see the balance transfer terms tracker.
