Citi Bank Balance Transfer Credit Cards

Citi runs some of the longest introductory balance transfer periods available, and its cards sit near the top of most comparisons. They also carry two conditions that cost people money: the transfer has to be completed within four months of opening the account to get both the promotional rate and the lower fee, and you cannot move a balance from another Citi card.

Here is what the offers actually are, how to request a transfer, and how long Citi takes to process one.

Citi Simplicity18 months, transfers completed within 4 months of account opening3% (min $5) within 4 months, then 5% (min $5)17.49% to 28.24% variable$0

Diamond Preferred gives you three more months. Simplicity charges no late fee and no penalty APR, which protects the promotional rate itself if you miss a payment. If your income is irregular, that protection can be worth more than the extra quarter.

Citi offers promotional transfer rates on other cards in its lineup as well. We list a card here only once we have verified its terms against Citi’s current disclosure.

How to do a balance transfer with Citi

If you do not have the card yet, request the transfer during the application. Citi lets you enter the balances you want to move as part of the application flow, which is the simplest route and starts the clock immediately on approval.

If you already hold an eligible Citi card, you can request a transfer by logging into your account online or by calling the number on the back of the card.

Either way, you will need the following for each balance you want to move:

  • The account number of the card or loan being paid off
  • The exact amount you want to transfer
  • Confirmation that the amount plus the transfer fee fits inside your approved credit limit

Citi displays balance transfer requests on its status page within one business day of the request, so you can confirm it registered without calling.

One point in Citi’s favor: a balance transfer draws on your card’s existing available credit, so the transfer itself does not generate a credit inquiry. Applying for the card does, but the transfer does not add a second one.

How long does a Citi balance transfer take?

Citi states an overall range of 2 to 21 days. The timing depends on whether the account is new or existing.

New account. Citi begins processing the request 14 days after the account is opened. That delay is deliberate, and during those 14 days you can modify or cancel the transfer by phone. Once the 14 days are up, processing takes up to another 10 days. In practice, budget three to four weeks from approval.

Existing account. Processing takes up to 10 days, depending on the disbursement method you choose.

Keep paying the old card until you confirm the balance is zero. This is the most expensive mistake in the process. A pending transfer does not excuse a missed payment on the old account, and a 30 day late mark lands on your credit report regardless of what Citi is doing in the background. Citi says the same in its own balance transfer documentation.

Citi may also decline to process a transfer based on your available credit, your creditworthiness, or suspected fraud on the account. A submitted request is not a completed one.

The four month window is the expensive detail

Both cards above apply the 3% fee only to transfers completed within four months of account opening. After that the fee becomes 5%.

On a $10,000 transfer, that is the difference between $300 and $500. The promotional 0% period is tied to the same four month deadline, so missing it can cost you the entire offer, not just the cheaper fee.

If you are opening a Citi card specifically to move a balance, request the transfer in the first few weeks. There is no advantage to waiting, and Citi’s 14 day processing delay on new accounts eats into the window on its own.

You cannot transfer a Citi balance to a Citi card

Citi does not allow balance transfers from other accounts issued by Citibank, N.A. or its affiliates. This is the rule people discover after applying.

The affiliate part matters more than it sounds. Citi issues cards under a number of retail and co-branded partnerships, so a card that does not say Citi on the front may still be a Citi account. Check the issuer on the back of the card, or on your statement, before assuming a balance is eligible.

Every major issuer has this restriction. It is not specific to Citi. But because Citi cards are so often the best transfer offer available, Citi cardholders run into it more than most.

Before you apply

Run your own numbers first. Our balance transfer calculator will show you the interest you would avoid, the fee you would pay, and the monthly payment needed to clear the balance before the promotional period ends. It will also tell you when the fee costs more than the interest saved, which happens more often than the offers suggest.

Then check three things:

  1. Who issues your current balance. If it is Citi or a Citi affiliate, these cards are not an option for that debt.
  2. Whether the required monthly payment is realistic. Divide the balance plus the fee by the promotional months. If you cannot pay that comfortably, a longer promotional period is worth more to you than a lower fee.
  3. What the regular APR is. If there is any chance you will still be carrying a balance when the promotion ends, that rate is what you will actually pay.

Common questions

Can I transfer more than one balance to a Citi card?
Yes, as long as the total plus fees fits within your approved credit limit. If your limit comes in lower than expected, move the highest APR balance first.

Does a Citi balance transfer affect my credit score?
Applying for the card creates a hard inquiry. The transfer itself does not, because it uses credit you already have. Over time, moving a balance to a new card lowers your overall utilization, which usually helps.

Can I cancel a Citi balance transfer after requesting it?
On a new account, yes, during the 14 day period before Citi begins processing. Call the number on the back of your card. After processing begins, it cannot be reversed.

What happens when the promotional period ends?
Any remaining balance begins accruing interest at the regular variable APR for your card. The promotional rate does not extend, and the remaining balance is not forgiven.

Do I have to close my old card?
No. A balance transfer does not close the old account. You can close it separately, but consider the effect on your credit utilization and average account age first.
